Facebook’s new rules make more data public

So far the media seems focused on the shiny ball that Facebook is waving in front of their face; the control it is giving users over who sees what information the user posts on their profile.

But that’s not the story.

The real story is what information Facebook is making publicly available.  CNN provides one example: now everyone can see what fan pages you belong to unless you make your friends list unavailable to all which appears quite restrictive.  Also, these new rules allow third party developers access to lots of your personal information through the back end.

Facebook allows users to provide feedback on the new privacy rules here.
