Craigslist scam: Chico man busted for Nigerian swindle

February 5, 2009

In a complicated scheme, someone in Nigeria supplied the suspect in Chico California with bogus checks and money orders that were sent to pay for goods advertised on Craigslist.  So not only would the person get the goods procured with the fake money but someone, not the suspect, would email the seller claiming they had overpaid for the items and then get them to pay back the difference usually to the suspect’s address.

I agree with the author of this article in terms it not making sense for law enforcement to close down Craigslist escort ads but also believe that  police should focus more on the real crimes rather than arresting people for having sex for money in motel rooms.

“We feel we are doing these people a favor by conducting these prostitution sweeps,” George added. “It’s a dangerous way to make a living and is often tied into drugs and organized crime.”

And here is another defensive quote of the value of arresting for prostitution:

“If you don’t believe that [prostitution is a serious crime] then you’ve never really seen the results up front, and up close. You don’t see the exploitation, the sexual harassment and the rapes that occur as a result of this activity,”

Guess what?  Sexual exploitation, harassment and rapes are all crimes and they don’t necessarily involve prostitution.

  • Seven arrested in prostitution sting out of Albany New York; a “promoter” and six of his ladies.  The promoter was quite concerned about being busted by the cops so he had a system to check the officer’s phone number and also check out his car but clearly his “system” wasn’t effective. Craigslist scam watch: fake football tickets

January 23, 2009

Dozens of folks turned up for the NFC game in Glendale and were turned away because their tickets were counterfeit and guess what?  They had bought them on Craigslist. a legitimate ticket-seller seemed to relish the story as it re-inforces its messaging with their 100% ticket guarantee.  Their spokesman said, “I am surprised that many people got duped,” said Keith Pate, spokesperson for “But I’m not surprised knowing most bought off Craigslist.”

This counterfeit scam could be even bigger for the upcoming Superbowl.

This article has some good tips on how to avoid being scammed.

Craigslist scam watch: who’s the bird brain?

January 21, 2009

A man breaks into a Oregon pet stores stealing a cockatoo, chameleons, snakes and other animals.  The pet store owner with the cockatoo decides to see if anyone is selling such a bird on Craigslist.  Sure enough someone is and sure enough when the owner sets up a meeting with the seller it turns out its his cockatoo “Reed.”  The man got 90 days in jail and had to also relinquish his collection of snakes, lizards and other critters.

Craigslist scam watch: I got a house for you…

January 17, 2009

In honor of the Presidential Inauguration, I am starting a new series called the “Craigslist scam watch.”  In our new Internet and now recessionary economy, I think all us Craigslist users need to be on alert.

Today’s scam comes courtesy of Crime

Libra Latham would scan Craigslist ads looking for houses for rent or sale in the Orlando area and then post ads for the same houses but at lower a price.  When someone showed up, she would pose as a rental agent and make phony rental deals and take off with the cash.

How Libra was caught:

After law enforcement had received complaints of the scam, they devised a trap for Libra.  After she had shown a house to a suspicious viewer who complained immediately to the police they set up another viewing of the house that same night and as Libra executed the phony rental agreement, the investigators waiting nearby came in and busted her  (Sounds like a great Cops episode).

Contact Sergeant Virgil Ford or investigator Chuck Lee at (386) 668-3830 if you suspect you were victimized by Libra.
