Facebook facing new class action?

A Sacramento law firm is seeking people who have been lured into signing up for unwanted subscriptions based on Facebook, MySpace and many other social networking websites according to this Silicon Valley Business Journal article.   Facebook says that such advertisers must adhere to their ad networking policies and that it has disabled two such ad distributors.

Lets see if that’s enough for the company to avoid a lawsuit.

That’s what boxer Amir Khan’s lawyers are demanding a lawsuit filed against Facebook:

“UK boxing champion Amir Khan and his promoter Frank Warren, are threatening Facebook with a lawsuit, alleging that the site carries abusive and defamatory remarks about the British boxer.”

Goodyear sued in fatal accident

“According to the tire tread separation lawsuit, the Goodyear tire on Navarrete’s vehicle failed, killing Navarrete and injuring five other passengers. The complaint alleges that the tire lacked a nylon cap that would have reduced the effect of heat along the belt edge. The claim also accuses the company of failing to warn consumers about the potential risk of Goodyear tire failures caused by tread separation and the loss of vehicle control that it could cause.”

“Toyota Prius headlights shut off without warning, and Toyota knows it but fails to warn customers, a class action claims in Los Angeles Superior Court. The class claims the factory-installed “high-intensity discharge headlights” in 2006-2008 models have the dangerous defect, and that “hundreds of consumers” have reported it to the National Traffic Safety Administration, but Toyota still refuses to acknowledge it. ”

Tagged sued for snagging email contacts

“Tagged.com finds itself in even more legal trouble after two California residents have sued the social network for allegedly tricking them into sharing their email contacts and using those contacts for false advertising. Miriam Slater of Santa Barbara and Sara Golden of Los Angeles who filed the suit are seeking class-action status and are claiming the site violated several US laws like the Stored Communications Act and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.”

“The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia today revived a New Jersey woman’s consumer-fraud suit, thrown out in 2008, after finding it wasn’t barred by U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations covering food labeling. The suit contends the drink uses an artificial sweetener.”

Prearranged funeral service provider sued for fraud

“The Cassity family of St. Louis preyed on consumers and funeral homes” in a multimillion-dollar prepaid funeral scheme, according to a 138-page RICO claim in Federal Court. The plaintiffs are nationwide life and health insurance guaranty associations who say they were left with a $600 million tab from the Cassitys’ scheme. ”

“National Prearranged Services, Lincoln and Memorial Service Life Insurance ran out of money last year. An estimated 150,000 prepaid funeral contracts throughout the country were left in limbo.”

Puppy mill suit against Petland not dead

“The suit was dismissed Friday by a federal judge in Phoenix who said the allegations were too general and that the complaint did not show that the plaintiffs were direct victims of the fraud that was alleged in the suit.
Judge David Campbell of U.S. District court in Phoenix gave the pet owners until Aug. 29 to file a revised complaint with more detailed allegations.”
