Cook County Sheriff won’t drop Craigslist suit yet

May 15, 2009

“Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is not yet ready to drop his lawsuit against Craigslist. That’s despite the Website’s announcement that it’s taking extra steps to filter out ads for prostitution. Dart spokesperson Steve Patterson says the sheriff is “cautiously optimistic” Craigslist will follow through.

PATTERSON: We’ve heard promises from Craigslist before about changes they would make, promises to better monitor what’s going on there, and they’ve failed to live up to those promises. So, while it looks like a step in the right direction, we’re not totally comfortable just yet.”

Twitter get into sex ad business

April 27, 2009

“Move over, Craigslist: The social networking site Twitter is being colonized by escort services able to “tweet” scores of potential johns at once and link customers to their Web sites.

A recent search of the free service found so-called escorts from coast to coast using the site.

Among its members is “bostonescorts,” which had 187 subscribers, known as “followers,” and featured a photo of a brunette in a sheer black top casting a come-hither look. The user’s Web site is a link to “NaughtyReviews,” a clearinghouse for all things erotic, from Boston strip clubs and massage parlors to scantily clad escorts.”

Dr. Phil & the “Dark side of the Internet”

March 31, 2009

“Dr. Phil explores a new, dangerous trend affecting your honor student.  No longer needing to walk the streets to exchange sex for money, young women are turning to the reputable Web site craigslist.com to sell their bodies.”

The dark side of Dr. Phil more like it.  Don’t these people have anything better to talk about?  Here’s a link to Dr. Phil’s conversation with Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart about his ridiculous lawsuit against Craigslist.  Your tolerance for self righteous drivel better be higher than mine.

Now police post sex ads on Craigslist

February 6, 2009

Update:  Fallout from prostitution arrests:

*Dennis Martin, acting president of the Conestoga school board is forced to resign.

*Darren Bates, President of Omaha’s firefighter union has been put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

So let me get this straight.  The cops put up a sex ad on Craigslist and bust a couple high profile people who have or may lose their jobs based on this sting operation.  How is this a good thing?

Article:

Its one thing for police to answer sex ads to bust folks for prostitution but now they are running their own ads to bust people?

I have a small frame with lovely curves. I am playfull and seductive, teasing and tantalizing until you just .¤.¤. well, you’ll see.”

And with that ad, the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Taskforce snag six men including a school board president, attorney, firefighter and school teacher.   The police claim this isn’t entrapment because the ads don’t explicit mention $ for sex.

“They can’t initiate a conversation leading to an offer,” Flood said. “They need to be coy and allow the buyer to describe what they want.”  Though they did list, $150hh and $250fh but hey, that could be for window washing!

Prostitutes, Craigslist & the Superbowl

January 29, 2009

Tampa police are expecting more than mere tourists in Tampa this weekend.  As a result the police will be quite active; they will frequent the usual gather places as well as massage parlors and “asian” (rascist?) spas.”  The article doesn’t mention that the police will answer Craigslist sex ads as part of the operation but there is no question that they are Internet savvy.

“These events draw large numbers of ladies into town. We know because we see gigantic a uptake in internet activity. The ladies post they’re coming into town,” says Bartlett.

Dangers of Craigslist sex ads

January 15, 2009

Update II: on police Craiglist sting:

Arcadia California police claim they don’t regularly monitor Craigslist but, “”it was just that one of our guys had heard from somebody else that there was this kind of activity on Craigslist.”  Really?  Just heard recently about this?  So police met a couple of women in hotels including a 13 year old and made arrests.

“We’ve done things in the past with Craigslist and with Facebook,” Caputo said. “I can think, going way back before Craigslist, of us dealing with a prostitute who had her own Web site.”

Update on Craigslist crime:

Arrests made in Tennessee of a couple running an escort service via Craigslist.

Another Craigslist related story: teenagers in Michigan advertise a free non-existant baby on Craigslist complete with photo taken off a website.

Finally, there is the story of Craigslist robberies, what can’t you do through Craigslist?   In this case a man advertises gift cards and cell phones on Craigslist and then when people show up to purchase the advertised goods, the man pulls out a gun and robs them of….cell phones that he posts for sale on Craigslist!

CrimeNe.ws is a blog that follows Craigslist sex ad crimes and crackdown. They posted a story about a typical Craigslist sex for pay transaction involving a man who ran for the assembly in New York. He got violent with the woman offering him an “exotic body rub” because she refused him the full massage when he told her didn’t have enough cash.

CrimeNe.ws ends the story of a paid sexual encounter gone wrong as follows:

“The danger to not only the johns but also for the working girls continues unabated on craigslist no matter what measures craigslist puts in place. Only the complete removal of the erotic services section would be effective in cutting down on these crimes.”

First, why is it “Craigslist” that is the cause of the problem?  Aren’t there plenty of websites and other ways people can engage in prostitution?  Has Craigslist truly increased these kinds of crimes?
