DIRECTV and Comcast settle FTC suit

Just yesterday I posted about another lawsuit against Comcast for its violation of the “Do not call” registry and today comes this $2.31 million settlement with the FTC.

Consumers tricked into memberships: lawsuit

The complaint alleges that MemberWorks Incorporated takes consumer information that telemarketers gathered when customers called to order to products and signs them up for a paid membership that they were told was free. Plaintiff called a telemarketer to purchase exercise tapes and was told that she was also signed up a  free membership but was subsequently billed $72.

This class action lawsuit was filed in Idaho state court.

Charity telemarketing: don’t give by phone

In a report issued by the Attorney General of  New York, they found that the telemarketers make sixty percent of the money raised by phone leaving the charity less than forty percent.  Make donations online!

The federal government has issued a new regulation that allows consumers receiving prerecorded phone calls an opportunity to opt out of all future calls.  The notice also says that consumers should only receive such calls where there is an “established business relationship.”  I don’t know about you but I don’t have such relationships with any timeshare companies that currently call my house.  It makes me wonder how effective these regulations will actually be.  I know, be positive!
