Safeway sued for bait and switch tactics

“Safeway lured customers to its pharmacies by issuing discount coupons it did not honor, a class action claims in Superior Court.
Lead plaintiff Betsy Pinkney says she transferred her prescription to Safeway’s pharmacy in April in response to an ad that promised 20 percent off of certain items to customers who brought their prescriptions to Safeway.
The coupon excluded items such as liquor, tobacco, and selected gift cards. Pinkney says a pharmacy employee gave her a second coupon and told her to give it to the clerk at checkout. She says the second coupon was valid for only one week, though the original expired in June. She says she picked out several hundred dollars worth of gift cards that were not on the “exceptions” list, but the scanner failed to recognize the discount. Pinkney says she was told she could not use the coupon for the gift cards even though they were not on the exceptions list. ”

Thanks for the heads up on the Safeway pharmacy coupons-I wonder what others they might not honor?

I would like to add for readers here to beware of granny smith apples and navel oranges in small brown bags near signs that say $1.99. They look alot like the ones for the very ripe bananas given at a discount price of 99 cents per bag that weigh around 3 lbs. when filled to the top but have a handle which says ‘weigh first’ and there is very fine print on the $1.99 sign saying ‘per lb.’

While in a hurry I grabbed one and thinking it would be $1.99 for the bag; it turned out to be a little over $9 and my receipt for a combined number of items reflected the excessive amount! I went into the store not expecting my receipt to total more than $10 but it was around $17. Safeway refunded me the difference at their customer service counter but I think they are pulling the wool over customers who don’t watch their budget and simply toss stuff into their carts and quickly go through checkout without batting an eye because they aren’t minding their costs.

Either the cost of gas, crop damage or something is amiss with Safeway to charge so much for a 3 lb. bag of apples or oranges-Consumer Beware!
